invocation

In the shortening of our days,
In the lengthening of these deepest nights,
We turn to the light within,
The precious light of grace, of truth, of hope.
You are the light,
Open our hearts, to tend that light…
With the oil of prayer,
The oil of music,
The oil of worship,
Oh Holy One,
Give us oil in our lamps,
Keep us burning, burning, burning
So that your Flame of love
Can stoke the heart of the world,
In the shadows of our living.
Give us oil in our lamps,
We pray,
Amen.

It sounds like you are using the same lectionary as we are - about the virgins and their lamps? We sang that old song about 'Give me oil...' which is yonks old but the grandma and grandpas remembered it.
Our preacher spoke about responsibility rather than focus on the second coming. He won't tackle that one.

Yes, I wrote the invocation for worship today...our seminarian preached on "tending the light".
She did great!

the prayer/invocation is beautiful. i bet it was amazing in the service. if you don't mind i'd love to copy it (and put your name to it of course!) and keep it in a file of "other people's poems" that i read and use for worship.

lovely.
